Waste Not: Why it’s important to keep your organics cart contaminant-free

Published Aug 24

Most of us think of recycling as the standard single-stream items: paper, metal, plastic and glass.

Did you know that our yard trimmings and food scraps get recycled too? All single family residences in Newark have a green cart for organics: yard waste, food scraps and food-soiled paper. And what you keep out of your green cart is just as important as what you put in your green cart.

For more tips about what can be recycled or composted in Newark, visit site.republicservices.com/site/alameda-county /en/pages/newark.aspx or call 657-3500.

Jennifer Makin is a recycling coordinator at Republic Services, supporting the City of Newark’s recycling efforts.
