Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus also made an appearance during the event, held at Newark Civic Center. It was presented by City of Newark and Wa. Hospital Healthcare Foundation.

Mayor Alan Nagy and Pat Pierce-Gintjee lit the Memorial Tree.

Pierce-Gintjee and her family join the city each year for the tree lighting tradition, which began in 1986 in honor of her late husband, Carl Pierce, who led the Newark Police Department from 1979 to 1986.

In its twentieth year, the annual Trees of Angels campaign raises funds and increases awareness of hospice care. The trees will be lit throughout the holidays in the Tri-City area.
