Big Newark fire at plastics plant sends black smoke over East Bay

Fire crews were battling a colossal two-alarm blaze at a plastics recycling plant in the East Bay city of Newark on Fri afternoon.

Footage from TV choppers showed black smoke pouring from the plant on the 6500 block of Smith Avenue that was engulfed in flames. The Alameda County Fire Department tweeted at 5:30 in the afternoon that the fire had been contained, about 2 and a half hrs. after it ignited.

No one has been injured, fire officials said.

Motorists, neighbors and et on social media posted images of the dark plume from miles away.
